The North Hastings Economic Development Committee (NHEDC), in partnership with the County of Hastings, secured funding in January of 2013 from Community Futures Development Corporation of North & Centre Hastings & South Algonquin to conduct a survey of seasonal residents in Hastings County. While surveys have been conducted in the past in Hastings County, this is the first time that the Seasonal Resident population has been surveyed.
I can't believe it's been almost seven years since I was hired as the Economic Development Manager for Hastings County! Time sure does fly by!
A great deal of work has taken place in that time since August, 2007. I started with a blank canvass and eventually there emerged a few award winning initiatives and strategies to build the foundation for successful economic development services across the County.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of Natural Rhythms Health Centre's new expanded location in Stirling-Rawdon. Owner Dr. Dan Boyle, a chiropractor, recently sought larger space for his practice and dojo studio. His new location is just west of downtown Stirling at 400 West Front Street, Unit 8.
I can just hear Homer Simpson saying, "Mmmmmm Beer!!!" Yes Beer is a yummy treat and great thirst quencher. It's also an opportunity for new investment and jobs!
As reported by the CBC, the Conference Board of Canada says beer accounts for 45% of all beverage alcohol sales. Beer makes 1 out of 100 Canadian jobs.
As well, 85% of the beer consumed in Canada is produced here. That's great to hear.
Since December, 2009, our County has invested in the role of an Enterprise Facilitation Coordinator to provide free and confidential business coaching. This is support for new and existing entrepreneurs, regardless of whether they're on a main street, in an industrial park or situated on a back country road.
It's also not just the "Facilitator". Through the help of a volunteer Resource Networking Board, entrepreneurs are provided with connections and resources to help them better manage or open their business.
On Friday, October 18th, our County hosted the 2nd Annual HOTie Tourism Dinner and Awards Celebration to recognize the successes and achievements of our local tourism businesses, organizations, festivals and individuals. As part of the municipality of Marmora and Lake outreach on the innovative pumped storage energy project at the former Marmoraton Iron Mine, the Reeve, Terry Clemens, and members of other municipalities in the area hosted an event at the site with Minister of Energy, Hon. Bob Chiarelli and Minister of Rural Affairs, Hon. Jeff Leal on August 15th.
NDP MPPs Catherine Fife and Michael Mantha visited the Municipality of Marmora and Lake on Monday to meet local officials and to tour the Marmora Pumped Storage Hydro Project Site, announced Reeve Terry Clemens.

According to a news release issued by the Municipality of Tweed, the community welcomed a group of foreign investors at a gala celebration on February 25th in the Hamlet of Marlbank. Mrs. Sophia Yan of Mixculture Tourism & Technology Company has purchased a large parcel of land with the intention of opening an international resort destination. While complete details are not yet available the company is looking into the feasibility of a golf course, spa, winery and other uses for the 325+ acres of land along Lime Lake.
The Bancroft Times published a story on the front page of their February 7, 2013 edition featuring a potential huge boost for Wollaston Township. The boost could come from the proposed Deer River Cardiac Health and Wellness Retreat/Resort. Read the story here.
